Queen of Heart(break)

Happy Spooks Night, ladies and gents! 🎃 How lucky that it should fall on a Sunday. After the real-life horror all of us had last year, I could almost feel that this Halloween will be as festive as it used to be again. Of course, with the hope that we won’t be as indulgent in our consumption and learn a thing or two from the situation we’ve put ourselves into in 2020. I would strongly urge you to look through your wardrobe and belonging to stir up the spooky spirit for the costumes and decor, instead of buying new and disposables.

What are you planning to do on this ghostliest of holiday? Agung and I tried this cute little Hainanese restaurant last week—and it was so good! We tried their Hainan Chicken Rice, of course, both poached and roasted, complete with garlic stir-fry bok choy. Yum! Their Liang Teh is the best I’ve ever had too! The place itself is sooo cozy, with amazing ’60s Chinese decor—the interior looks like it comes right out of a Wong Kar Wai film. All we need is a little street violence and doomed romance, and you got yourself the perfect setting for A Brighter Summer Day.

Also, let this mark the day I’ve given up on Halloween costumes 👏🏻 I don’t know what I was thinking—I never spare enough time to think up a good one. This year’s costume is partly DIY, mind you. I used materials that I had at hand already and partly used this DIY tutorial from The Brave Life—formerly Delightfully Tacky. The idea comes from wanting to wear red to the Chinese restaurant and to have a simple, conceptual costume. So here’s The Queen of Heart(break)! Careful, she may wear her heart on her sleeves, but she won’t hesitate to break yours without mercy. Not going to lie—she’s kind of my alter ego.

As usual, let me leave you with all sorts of recommendations this Halloween. If you fancy watching some ghost-free, spooky flicks, feel free to check out this list I made. My recent favourite watch is I onde dager, a Norwegian horror-comedy that will make you laugh and terrify you. If you fancy something supernatural, however, I would highly recommend watching His House—an interesting take on African horror, honestly. Reading-wise, My Sister the Serial Killer is light, suspenseful story I’d recommend. A few stories in Princesses Behaving Badly also fit the theme. Lastly, you can always listen to the Halloween Special of my favourite podcast, Let’s Talk About Myths, Baby!
