Comfort First

There’s something very surreal about the way we all live now. We, most of us, grew up believing that plagues and pandemics are a thing of the past—something we heard happened in the middle ages—yet, somehow, here we are. When we talk of pandemics, we often think of people dying, hygiene problems and a gloomy sense of fear all around. What we never realised—or me, at least—is what the pandemic might mean to various other sectors of our lives.

Then again, to be fair, an outbreak spread this large in the modern age is quite possibly unheard of. We’ve head outbreaks before, sure, but one that goes on a global scale has never been experienced before—well, at least, in my lifetime. Personally, for me, it was very shocking to see the economy crumble as we fight tooth and nails to keep our health—and that of our loved ones. Yet, at the same time, this trying time has cleared the air and healed the earth that we’ve been hurting for so long. Imagine that!

That is all very hard to hear, I’m sure. There’s just so much new information at a short period of time—some disconcerting, some uplifting. It’s understandable that we may feel a bit anxious and less than optimistic about the whole situation. For me, personally, I throw appearances out the window; comfort must always come first as much as I can. This is not just in terms of self-pampering—which, honestly, isn’t something that I tend to do anyway—but also in terms of putting clothes on, taking time to tackle my to-does and consuming news.

Recently, with being at home a lot more, I just realised that I don’t actually own a lot of casual shorts—that don’t come with buttons—so, when Pithecanthropus, a local ethical brand from Bali, was having an archive sale, I was over the moon to find their shorts. I’ve just been living in them for the past couple weeks.

Who cares about putting up appearances at this point? I believe we must all do what it takes to cope with the situation. Who cares if we’re not productive all the time or keep updated on the latest news? The world is as grim as it gets, but we must keep surviving.

How are you coping with the situation so far?
