Apple Ice Cream

At first, I wanted to write about a local dish to celebrate our Independence Day tomorrow. But, alas, I was unable to think of a suitable one. Unlike in the U.S., per se, where people celebrate the 4th of July with fireworks, barbecue and parades, our Independence Day is quite subtle. Schools usually hold “upacara bendera” – which is a ceremony where people stand at attention, while the committee read our ideologies, put our national flag up, we salute and sing our national anthem together, etc – and neighbourhoods hold fun activities both children and adult can attend, such as competitions and races.

We don’t necessarily have a special dish to devour on the day, so today I opt for a red-and-white dessert to sate your hunger. The recipe was actually taken from a Japanese manga I read in elementary school but it is so good! It is unique, super easy to make and incredibly healthy. You should make one and savour it with your loved ones!

Ingredients

(Original recipe from the manga Delicious! vol. 1)

  • 50 ml milk
  • 45 gr sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 150 ml cream
  • a bit of salt
  • 1 apple (medium)
  • 100 ml apple juice
  1. Put the milk, sugar and yolk into a saucepan and stir with a wooden spatula.
  2. Heat them up on low heat while stirring occasionally.
  3. Once they boil, put them in a larger bowl and let them cool.
  4. Meanwhile, peel the apple and grate it into a different bowl.
  5. In another bowl, whisk the cream until it thickens.
  6. Mix the grated apple, the thick cream and the apple juice into the larger bowl.
  7. Mix them all well and move them into an ice cream container.
  8. Leave the mixture in the freezer for an hour.
  9. Take it out and stir the mixture well. Repeat every 30 minutes 2-3 more times.
  10. Let it sit in the freezer for 2-3 more hours (or overnight)
  11. Dig in!

Tips: First and foremost, be careful with red apples! Sometimes their skin is layered with wax to keep them fresh longer. To check, currycomb the skin with a knife – if there is white residue on your blade, it’s probably wax. To avoid the wax, peel the apples before you eat them. If you want to prepare your ingredients, do the yolk last, unless you want it to clump up. Keep the heat of the pan low when you heat it up too, to avoid lumping!

Remember to whisk the cream separately before adding it to the first mixture, otherwise your ice cream won’t set. Mind the seeds when you grate the apples! Last but not least, be careful when you peel the apple! If you’re not good with knives, ask someone else for help or just cut them into pieces and grate them before you reach the skin. Lass euch schmecken!
