The Witching Hour

Have you ever wandered into the woods and found a lone figure shrouded in black from head to toe? When you do, better check your watch—it might just be the witching hour. Also, don’t forget to look down, careful not to step right onto one of their pentagrams—lest you want to be sacrificed to Lucifer or Baphomet or whichever evil entity the figure and her coven worship. This time of year it is no wonder that the woods will be crawling with their like, on the hunt for the next mortal blood they can sacrifice—do be careful when you walk into the woods this All-Hallows-Eve!

Yes! It’s that time of year again! Time seems to just fly by, doesn’t it? I swear it was only yesterday that I was fumbling through my wardrobe in the pursuit of embodying Dorothy for a day. Thankfully, finally, here comes one pumpkin day where I am fully prepared. This year, after dreaming of it for a decade—if not more—I am finally accepted into the Wiccan Coven as a full-fledged witch. They got me a broom and everything! Now, onto my first pentagram drawing. If you want to get yourself in the spooky mood, give my Halloween playlist a listen and let the spirit possess you. May you have a merrily spooky day 🎃

Don't Trust the Witch in the Woods

Okay, back to reality for a little bit: I’ve always wanted to dress up as a witch on Halloween. It seems like the most quintessential Halloween costume, doesn’t it? Seems almost lazy somehow—and lazy, really, is my middle name. All the years of compiling somewhat gothic clothing pieces culminates into this perfect, simple little outfit cum costume. Witchy enough for ya? What makes me the proudest is that most of the items in this outfit were thrifted—or old items in my wardrobe from over a decade ago. It was as if I was meant to be a witch all along. The broomstick is a happy accident, really. I cannot tell you just how happy and satisfied I am with this outfit—and photos, thanks to the keen eye of my satan-slave lover Agung.

What solidifies the look is also the somewhat grungy makeup though. And, as you know, I don’t really wear any makeup. Thankfully, my sister was in town and was kind enough to let me borrow her eyeshadow and lip tint—both of which are a shade darker than my complexion, perfect to create a somewhat dark and terrifying look without being too striking. I don’t know, you probably can’t see too much of it, but I hope it delivers that dark and spooky atmosphere I was going for anyway. My usual red lips wouldn’t be able to.

What the Witch Does in the Dark

This October I have emboldened myself to watch horror films (and series) just so I have more things to recommend to you guys. In case you don’t have any Halloween party plans tonight, feel free to try out some of these films. Since I’m dressed as a witch, perhaps the first films should be witch-themed. Obviously, the first that comes to mind is The Witch (dir. Robert Eggers), which follows a family in 1630 England who lives on the outskirts of the forest in constant threat of an unknown evil. This was Anya Taylor-Joy’s breakout role and she was superb in it! There’s also Suspiria—which never explicitly mentions witchcraft but definitely has that witchy energy. I hear the 1977 version (dir. Dario Argento) is so good, but I’ve personally only watched the 2018 version (dir. Luca Guadagnino) and it was mind-blowing. Another one that never explicitly mentions witchcraft but with that same eerie feel is The Blackcoat’s Daughter.

Onto the not-so-witchy films, I just recently watched Last Night in Soho (dir. Edgar Wright). Gosh, I love the ’60s London vibe. Thomasin McKenzie’s performance was wild! Anya Taylor-Joy’s rendition of Downtown is so haunting. Other than that, earlier this year I saw Run Rabbit Run, which is a highly underrated Australian horror with a tragically beautiful family story. Another underrated film, I believe, is Pahanhautoja (a.k.a. Hatching), a Finnish film about a difficult mother-daughter relationship that gives birth to a monster. If you’re into psychological horror, Yorgos Lanthimos’s short flick Nimic is a perfectly brief but hauntingly terrifying story for you.

Last but not least, you cannot have spooks without books—get it? eh? eh? As far as spooky books, I haven’t read much this year, although the closest I got to them were in three German books. Insekt by Sascha Hommer tells the story of a school kid whose unusual form is revealed to his friends only outside of town. Traumnovelle by Arthur Schnitzler inspires Eyes Wide Shut (dir. Stanley Kubrick) and follows a man’s adventure as he stumbled into a sex cult in the city. Saving the best for last, this year I finally got around to reading Das Parfum which tells the story of a young man whose special olfactory senses lead him to murderous obsession.

On the series front, I’ve been on a Mike Flannagan binge this month. Starting with the release of The Fall of the House of Usher earlier this month. The story follows the Usher family who keeps dying one by one. If you like mild gore, this limited series is for you. That leads me to finally gather up the courage to watch The Haunting of Hill House—and it was…INCREDIBLE! The jumpscares, the hidden ghosts, the psychological double entendre—it’s all amazing. Highly recommended! Maybe, if I’m brave enough, I’ll continue on with The Haunting of Bly Manor after this.

When it comes to witches, to be honest, I really prefer the Wiccan ones who borrow their power from the earth—as opposed to the Harry Potter kind who feels almost academical and scientific in comparison. That’s the look I was going for with this costume—much inspired by the witches in Hocus Pocus, Stardust and Wicked. Initially, I was doubtful that an autumnal setting would be easily found in this part of the world—but lo and behold. As I’ve mentioned earlier, I really love how the photos turned out. And, really, it wouldn’t have looked this good without the right eye—the eye of my satan-slave lover. I’m so happy that someone else can bring out the autumn in me, especially for this spooky occasion. Boo!

After these photos were taken, we ended up spending the rest of the day together while I stayed in full witchy getup. Not going to lie, a lot of people stared at me the whole time—I guess I still looked pretty wicked to them, huh? Well, I hope you’ll have a pretty spooky Halloween! Who knows? Maybe on your way home, you’ll spot that little figure in black that will lead you down a magical realm—maybe in ways you’ve never expected and never wanted.
