Hey, Batter Batter!

These days I find myself gravitating more towards my usual haunts—as you can see from this post earlier this year. Call it age, call it exhaustion, but I feel like exploring new things and places can often feel somewhat tedious. Sometimes it feels good to just kick back and relax in our comfort zones. It doesn’t have to be a defeatist mindset. Comfort zones do expand, you know. And that’s kind of what happened in the location of today’s post. Completely impromptu—not unlike the previous occasion—but it just so happens to be pretty deserted in a good way. Moreover, it was—again—Agung‘s idea.

A Good Ol’ American Classic

If I’m being honest, donuts just aren’t my favourite food. But if there’s one donut that I like, it’s Dunkin’ Donuts. They’re just such classics! They don’t taste too sweet, which is perfect for my sensitive tongue and teeth. They have a selection of timeless flavours and variants that even non-donut fan like me can enjoy. Not only that, they also have the best iced lemon tea I’ve ever tasted. I can never get enough of it—their taste is truly second to none.

Sadly, for the past several years, I’ve been seeing Dunkin’ Donut branches close left and right. They used to be everywhere—especially in malls—but now they are pretty scarce. At least 2 of my favourite branches have shut down since I arrived back in Indonesia in 2014. They are, thankfully, now available outside of malls—in stand-alone cafés dotted across the city, although still pretty rare. And in one of these joints do Agung and I perch regularly.

Unlike me, Agung is a huge fan of donuts. Normally, he would often opt for Krispy Kreme, but lately I have shown him the classic goodness of Dunkin’ and he has since started to warm up to their taste as well. A Dunkin’ Donuts branch close to our usual haunts has become a regular pit stop for us—a place we’d usually go to when we’re looking for just a place to settle down to have long chats or to work. On the weekends is our favourite time—to take full advantage of their buy 1 get 2 beverages promo. That large-sized iced lemon tea serving is just a must. Agung would usually consult his mood before picking his beverage.

No matter how long since Dunkin’ Donuts first came to this country, some things just never change. First, as I’ve mentioned, there’s the classics flavours that has never really undergone any significant changes. Then there’s the all-American interiors that keeps that donut-shop classic aesthetics—there’s something nostalgic about it. But, most importantly, is their self-service donut shelf that allows us to pick our own flavours—and mull over our choices in peace at that. No other donut joints I know has ever offered that—it is an experience available exclusively at Dunkin’. Yes, they don’t really innovate the variants they offer, but why should they? People keep coming back for more anyway.

The t-shirt is also given by Agung, although I didn’t have to steal this one. It was also thrifted, mind you—and I believe it’s from Japan. Don’t you just love the skeleton anatomy on the back? It gives off this almost punk look to the outfit. Agung, for one, was kind of perplexed to see me wear a black t-shirt for a change—I admit it is a rarity.

All this put together—added with the ponytail over the back of the cap—somehow forms a baseball-player look that just makes me want to go, “Hey, batter batter batter!” Fun fact: I used to be part of my high school’s softball team—and I daresay I was a pretty good pitcher—but only went to two trainings before I decided to quit (lol).

Now, on to the outfit. Almost everything in this outfit was thrifted—although not all of them thrifted by me. You’ve seen the jacket before. Well, these pants were acquired along with that jacket. I really love their high waist and straight cut. The stripes are my favourite—they add a subtle pattern and texture to the look. The material is also pretty light, making it so comfortable to wear in practically any weather.

You’d think the cap is a set with the pants, but it was actually thrifted on a separate occasion by Agung—from the same place, though. I saw it hanging in his room when I visited over Eid holiday and decided to steal it from him. He happily obliged. Together with the pants, they create a lovely uniform look.

Ladies and gentlemen, the lad behind the lens!

I just really love their lemon tea.

Okay, allow me to have a little life update now—I feel like I haven’t done something like that in ages. First of all, I’ve been doing great. Work has been what it is, but I’m getting by better lately—although we shall see. What has been occupying me lately is twofold: first, there’s the annual reading challenge—I’ve read 13 out of 30 books (which makes me 2 books ahead of schedule, according to Goodreads). I realised I’ve been reading 90% non-fictions this year—does this mean my taste is becoming more mature? second, I’ve also been getting more regular commission orders. If you need an illustration made for you and/or your loved ones—for whatever occasion or even no occasion at all—feel free to check out the price list and slide into my dm. I’ll finally be back next week with a little look exploring a new-to-me neighbourhood, so stay tuned!

thanks for reading
