3 Days, 4 Eateries in Bandung

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you may notice that I’ve been writing about Bandung a lot lately—and it’s looking like it probably won’t stop anytime soon. The last trip I took was during Eid holiday, since my sister got admitted to the hospital, hence not being able to visit us in Jakarta. I decided to just pay her a visit instead and spend out first Eid in Bandung. These are the photos from that time—which basically means they’ve been sitting in my hard drive for well over a month.

Since I came to Bandung around Eid holiday, a lot of places were closed—which is to be expected. We didn’t really have much choice on places to go and things to do other than eat, really. So these are some of the food places that my sister and I went to while we were roaming aimlessly in Bandung during Eid holiday. They were all really pleasant places, although probably lacking in variety. So, without further ado, I hope you’ll enjoy these places.

Stop 1: Low-Key Lunch Spot

 Kofu Coffee Sutami

We went to this place after our pamper session at a nearby salon—which is my sister’s regular place that I’ve mentioned before (but in a different branch). Apparently, my sister would often go here after visiting the salon too, just to grab a meal and hang out by herself. The place itself is within walking distance from the salon and looks pretty unassuming just on the side of the street. If my sister hadn’t introduced me to this place, I wonder if I would even notice it as I pass by—seems pretty unlikely.

As we walked in, I notice how surprisingly roomy the place was. Although small and looks pretty tucked in, it consists of two floors, with the counter and cake display positioned at the landing. I really love the interior design of this place, with subtle beige colours dominating the areas, pops of orange from the chairs, the recycled-plastic tables, and the element of water from the subtle fountain. I love how it’s technically an indoor place, but feels semi-outdoor with its rock-strewn floors and plants. I believe, if you come up the stairs on the left side, there’s also a pilates/yoga studio next to it.

When we came here, I told my sister I needed a place to sit still for several hours, so I could finish an illustration I was working on. Our solution was to order two rounds of food and drinks. Firstly, we ordered for lunch. My sister got the Beef Saikoro Butter Garlic Pasta and I opted for the Chicken Diane Pasta, with Iced Peach Tea and Iced Hazelnut Latte for drinks. At this point, I just really needed coffee. They all tasted absolutely wonderful—so much so, that I finished my sister’s meal when she couldn’t finish it. I felt like the portion was perfect, and the price also still makes sense.

For round two, we decided to get dessert, because we were both eyeing the cakes. There was a wide array of choices displayed at the counter. We contemplated our choices for quite a bit, before we decided to get the Matcha Cheese Cake—and also an additional Lychee Tea. The cake was heavenly, we both absolutely loved it. And the tea added a nice, refreshing touch after the soft and creamy cake. The vibe, especially, was 10/10 (although we did come here at a particular time, so it may get crowded normally). Highly recommend!

Spot 2: Scream for Ice Cream

This tiny ice cream parlour is located not too faraway from my sister’s home. She said, she’d always wanted to try this place, so I’m guessing she’s been saving it for a while. After checking whether or not it was open, we paid the place a visit after lunch.

Before Eid came around, my sister and I already prepared food to eat at home since we knew a lot of places would be closed. Bandung is so run by small businesses that most of our eateries of choice probably wouldn’t be open during the holiday. But we still wanted to go and hang out while I was still in town. Enter Noom Ice Cream.

 Noom Ice Cream

The place is tucked between a hotel and an office building on the streets of Dipati Ukur. While it’s really small, its prominent signage makes it hard to miss. I personally adore the branding—love the rubber-hose style characters and sticker bombs. Although, to be honest, nothing else can be said of the ambience. The seating area is pretty dark and devoid of decorations. And, if you walk further inside, you’ll find a hidden coffee shop at the back called Zero Scale. We didn’t check it out, though, so we don’t know what the concept of the place was like–it actually looked pretty run down.

Noom has a wide variety of menu, from soft-serve ice cream, to milkshake, to float. The ice cream alone has 17 different flavours to choose from. After contemplating for a while, my sister’s choice landed on Caramel Biscoff (with vanilla soft-serve), while I chose the Matcha Sakura. They were both super good! I almost asked for seconds. There were still a lot of flavours we haven’t tried yet, though, so I’ll definitely be back for more.

Stop 3: Packed Bakery

Since we didn’t really hang out at Noom, that same day we decided to roam further into the city and find a new district to explore. This is how we ended up at Bahureksa, which I’d never been to before. Our initial destination was BAGELICIOUS®, which is pretty famous for their wide variety of bagel products. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived there, the line spilled outside and snaked all the way to the pavement. That was a hard nope! So we made a beeline to Drunk Baker, our second destination. We’ve passed by this bakery at Cihapit many times before, but I thought this branch would be bigger. Boy, was I wrong.

This little bakery is squeezed in right next to an Exsport flagship store—a local Bandung bag and apparel brand that I adore and have been using since middle school. There were very limited seating—probably less than 10 tables—and everyone was there to stay. There were many out-of-towners (but I guess I shouldn’t complain, ’cause I was one too 😂). The place serves all sorts of pastries, toasts, and coffee. I ordered their Croissant Garlic Scramble Egg and Vienna Coffee. There was a special promo for a free Scone Cream Cheese if you review on Google Maps, though, so I got that too. The Croissant was so heavenly! Love the softness of the bread and the egg. Absolute gem! My sister ordered their Butter Melting Cheese Toast—which turns out to be pretty sweet—and Lychee Tea. I can’t remember whether we finished them all or not.

Stop 4: Coffee with a Backyard

The place is not too far away from my sister’s home, but it is located way further up the mountain—our respective bike taxis kept climbing up and up (lol). Ciumbuleuit is also another district in Bandung that I hadn’t been to, which turns out to be lined with so many interesting eateries and coffee shops with large store areas. Masagi, in particular, even has a whole backyard where people could potentially lay out picnic blankets.

Okay, I wasn’t going to mention this, but I’ve cleared the air since so I’m just going to say it: I found this place thanks to a previous Bumble match. This was one of the places we were going to visit on our first date, but well, let’s just say the attraction faded before it could happen. We’re on pretty good terms, though, and he knows I took my sister here instead. This is Masagi Koffee in Ciumbuleuit.

 Masagi Koffee

Our first impression of this place when we arrived was how crowded it was—pretty much all the tables were occupied, but it definitely didn’t feel stuffy—and also, how scrumptious the dessert looks. Once we started ordering, though, it turns out everything was very enticing. My sister and I both ordered their Beef Slice Sandwich—without knowing that the other ordered the same dish (lol). It was super scrumptious! We love the honey mustard sauce so much. They gave us cutlery to eat it with, but the table we occupied wasn’t built for hard cutting action, so we made good use of our hands instead. For drinks, we went pretty basic with an Aren Latte and Iced Peach Tea—still pretty damn good, though.

Then we took a stroll around the backyard and make good use of our time taking photos together. A nice little physical activity to let the food go down nicely. That lasted around 15 minutes until we decided to sit back down and order dessert—such good-looking dessert should not go to waste. After deliberating for quite a while—we’re both air signs, mind you—we landed on their brownie and canéle, paired with a refreshing glass of Lychee Tea. They tasted rather nice, but I did kind of wish we had gotten their Carrot Cake too. Oh well, for next time.

Bonus: Tiny Coffee Joint

For such a small place, the coffee kiosk actually has a pretty wide selection of food and beverages to choose from. However, when I stopped by, their kitchen was apparently closed, so there was no food available. Despite having drunk coffee earlier that day, I decided to grab the Black Bohemian—basically, Black Lemonade (espresso, lemon and simple syrup) to-go.

Just before I made my way back to Jakarta, I managed to squeeze in this tiny coffee shop—literally squeezed between buildings—as I was walking alone back to my sister’s home from buying souvenirs for our brother back home. I’ve been eyeing this coffee shop whenever we passed it by, and wondered how I would ever be able to stop by for a visit…until I finally did.

The place was rather quaint in its own way. I can imagine myself hanging out with some friends after a bike ride, just here on the side of the street—if I were a local. But even alone and for only 5 minutes, it felt pretty relaxing to sit in front of this shop. Absolutely love the small-shop charm! The Black Bohemian was very refreshing, even though the coffee was pretty strong too. That being said, my body isn’t much affected by coffee, so even though I drank it at 8PM, I still managed to sleep soundly that night.

That pretty much summed up my whole Eid Holiday Bandung trip with my sister. Yes, all we did was eat this time, so I thought this format of the blog would be best. Nothing else we did was of note—most of them were practically errands and trauma dumping (lol). I’ll be heading back out there in a few weeks—and this time I’ll get an actual itinerary ready. There are a lot of libraries and book cafés in Bandung that I haven’t had the chance to visit, and I’ve gotten to know a few locals who I’d like to meet up with if the our time aligns. One of them will hold an exhibition I’m excited for. Watch this space for more update on that!

Recommend me a good independent library or book café in Bandung!
