Just call me Bivi!

Just call me Bivi!

A middle child between two siblings, I have always been driven to determine my own path and break expectations. Ever since I could remember, I’ve always loved drawing and wanted originally to be a mangaka (Japanese comic artist) before finding out that ‘illustrator’ was a career path I could choose. My dream was to be able to draw everyday (and get paid for it!), although I would soon realise that one person can have more than one dream in their lifetime.

Between 2011-2014 I pursued an education in Art History in Germany, which allowed me to live in three different cities—Karlsruhe, Halle (Saale)and Kassel. During this time, out of boredom, Alive as Always was born (particularly in January 2012). Initially, it was a space meant for sharing my OOTDs, but quickly grew to include books, food, travel and—eventually—environmental and social issues. Through this space, I’ve gotten to know the world and opened my eyes to social and environmental issues around us—shaping who I am today. Needless to say, Alive as Always has become my home on the internet.

In the end, I graduated with a BDes. degree in Visual Communications in Indonesia—10 years after graduating from high school. However, after trying my hand at copywriting professionally, I realised a new dream and started my career as a Copywriter—working first in a small startup and later on at a creative agency. It was an exhilarating experience that taught me a lot about the creative process and industry. Ultimately, however, I knew I still wanted to live out my childhood dream as an illustrator.

Five years later, in 2023, I finally quit my office job and decided to pursue a freelance career as an illustrator. That’s where we are right now.

About Take It Slow

In 2021, I published a book called Take It Slow which dives into the sustainable fashion industry in Indonesia. It talks about slow fashion in a nutshell. From this book, you get to learn the meaning of fast fashion and slow fashion, their impacts from various aspects, sustainable clothing materials and techniques, ways to create positive impacts for the earth with your clothes and even local brands who produce ethical and sustainable clothes.

Originally, this book was the final project to my studies. To make it easier to understand, I made sure to include as many illustrations and visual aids as possible—all of them are made by me. The writing was finished with the help of some of my wonder friends. It is written in Indonesian and only available in the country.
