Weekend Noods

Just popping in real quick—with only less than 10 photos!—to let you know of this charming little noodle place in Kramat Pela. It’s called The Weekend Bakmie and Agung and I actually grabbed a bowl before we headed to Joyland Day 3 last month—I wanted to squeeze it into the post from this prior weekend, but it was already too long. It was a relatively unique dining experience for us, and we thought everyone should give this place a chance—also, they asked us to spread the word, so here we are.

We found out about this place at first from this little Instagram post by Ketemu Lagi. Since we were in the area, we thought we’d give it a try. It seemed the perfect place to have lunch on a Sunday—and we were right.

Noods on a Sunday

When we arrived on location, the place seemed very unassuming. It is a small corner tucked between a massive garage and a flourishing tree. It was so small with no immediately-visible signage that we almost missed it. When we walked inside, however, we could immediately see that it was: 1.) really small in that warm, quaint way, and 2.) already very crowded—there were only 4 tables, and the last one available was the couch. We took the couch anyhow, clearly confused about how to order or where the menu was.

Shortly after, a waitress came to take in our order. We wanted to try the place’s unique menu selection. Agung chose Bakmi Sapi Rica Kemangi, while I opted for Bakmi Ayam Kampung Chili Oil—and we chose Iced Lemon Tea and Badak Sarsaparilla to wash them down with. Afterwards, all we had to do was wait. From what I could gather, the place only has a small number of staff, so it actually took a while for our food to arrive. Honestly, though, we didn’t really mind the wait and let me tell you why.

The whole vibe of the place was entirely homey—there were quirky knick knacks everywhere and photos of the owners on vacation with their family; it quite literally felt like being inside someone else’s living room. You could read their house rules (pictured here) to get a more solid idea of what this place was like. Not only in its decorations, literally everyone who walked in was greeted like a dear friend by everyone there—it was our conclusion that they knew each other personally or were just the place’s regulars.

Not long after, a couple walked in who we immediately saw were the owners. They greeted everyone (again) like a dear friend, catching up on things we could only guess at. But they also talked to us warmly, making conversations and making sure we were comfortable. It almost felt like we were being welcomed into a family we’d only just met. Such warmth!

Now, let’s talk about the food! When our orders finally arrived, we dug in almost straight away because we were so hungry. The Bakmi Ayam Kampung Chili Oil was superb! I love the softness of the chicken, the taste of the soup and the texture of the noodle. Also, the chili oil was marvellous! It was quite possibly one of the best chili oils I’ve ever tasted.

Then there was Agung’s Bakmi Sapi Rica Kemangi. I’ve never seen or tasted Kemangi cooked quite like that and it was genius! The beef was also very soft and compliments well with the noodles. Absolutely delicious! To top it off, everything was pretty affordable considering the quality and place. It was truly a warm and cozy dining experience.
