All my life I have been a huge fan of Japanese animation. Mostly, because they have all the most developed graphics and also I find their topics highly relatable. Although there are many genres that they tend to offer, love/romance is, of course, my favourite genre. My favourite studio is, obviously, Studio Ghibli. But I also admire Gonzo, Sunrise, Gainax, etc. Yes, I know my stuff. To this day, though, although there are several anime which have top-notch quality of graphics, one stuck to my mind. It’s 秒速5センチメートル (Byousoku Go Sentimetoru) which literally means 5 Centimetres per Second. It is basically a three-part movie, totalling in a sum of 65 minutes. The title talks about the speed of cherry blossoms falling, which often marks the beginning of a school year. That is a romantic notion. Before you go on any further, I must tell you, this movie is almost like a japanese-animated version of (500) Days of Summer.
The story is simple and really down-to-earth. A boy meets a girl. In grade school. One way or another, they fell in love. They got teased by their friends but they waved it off. They became close friends. Such a cruel lady, Fate is. She sent the girl away, she had to transfer schools. They still kept in touch, though, through letters. One day, they decided to meet. Unfortunately, it was a heavily snowy day and transport system was highly unreliable. That was a hard and long trip. It was as if the cruel lady of Fate has yet to be done playing with their love and lives. And that wasn’t the end of it…
This movie isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. For instance, a guy friend of mine recommended it to me because he loved it. In contrary, a girl friend of mine said it was so sad and she hated how it ended. To be fair, there was no happy ending but I think it’s very realistic. It’s a slice of life. Love comes, love goes. It’s only natural. Aside from the simple yet so true story, the graphics are really awesome. It’s like every detail of every corner of every frame of this movie has received a fair share of attention it deserves. How awesome! A little off topic but…the storyline of this movie reminds me a whole lot of this PV from Supercell – or is it the other way around? Enjoy your weekend.
